The purpose of this report is to recommend practical ways of reducing food waste at our school. Food waste is a serious problem because it increases costs and harms the environment.
The first issue is that portions are sometimes too large for younger students. It is therefore recommended that the canteen offer small and large portions. This would allow students to choose the amount they can comfortably eat and would reduce the food left on plates.
Secondly, a sharing table could be introduced. Students with unopened food they do not want could place it there for others to take. Clear rules would be needed to keep the food safe and organised.
It is also suggested that students complete a short weekly survey. Their feedback would help the canteen prepare more suitable meals.
If these measures are introduced, the school should waste less food, spend less money and encourage more responsible habits.
